quick notes
- her front socks extend about halfway up the back of the leg,
the back socks only cover the toes!
- dark gradients on the legs follow the front side, subtle angle
- gradient at the base of tail covers between a third and a fourth of it
- tail is very large and fluffy, as big or bigger than her entire body

nature
shy and cautious, Flicker tends to be elusive less because she wants to but because of how nervous her surroundings make her. she doesn't remember much from her transformation, but she does remember a suffocating darkness and dread, and she carries that with her now when she's bound to that place of darkness. whoever transformed her is a mystery to her, and being left alone to wake up underground and try to find her own way was traumatic in its own right. Flicker can be somewhat clingy as a result, afraid that when she lets someone go, they'll leave her abandoned again. Darkling was the one who found her eventually, and he gave her her name after she couldn't give him one when asked. Darkling sees much of himself in Flicker; abandoned, alone, and so hopelessly afraid, and he spends much of his time with her now, trying to show her the ropes of her new existence and slowly building her confidence the same way Txi patiently built his. Flicker has trouble staying underground for long and frequently emerges from the mine, looking into the distant forest and sometimes going back there. her heart longs for the trees again, even though she doesn't remember who she was before and why she feels this tug on her soul. it's another thing that makes her uneasy, because when she heeds the call of the woods she doesn't trust that Darkling will still be there when she returns, and she feels torn between the safety of their friendship and the unknown comfort of the forest floor. beneath her nerves she is sweet and kind. though she frequently apologizes for herself, worried she's too needy and taking up too much of someone else's time, she is sure to show appreciation and left to her own devices she defaults to trying to make things better around her in whatever way she can. part of her probably hopes that in setting things right for others, be it other esk or animals or plants around her, she may be able to heal the part of herself that feels so broken. |
boundary
though a quarry is often understood as open-pit or above-ground mining today, it had a different definition a couple of decades ago - where mining referred to breaking ores, and quarrying referred to breaking stone. the quarry Flicker inhabits is a part of Darkling's mine in the UK, underground and, to her, claustrophobic. though the quarry itself fell into disrepair much earlier than its mine counterpart, leading to many crumbling and unused passages. the stone that was quarried was nothing special like marble, but was just local stone dug out for use in a variety of construction projects, and the demand for such stone fell drastically after the turn of the 20th century, while mining operations continued due to the demand for coal. what remains in the quarry are hints of the people who used to work there; graffiti along the walls, treacherous wells dug into the mountain itself for water, broken pipes, torn cigarette packages, lamps that used tallow candles to light the way. tools can surprise you if you're not careful, deceptively sharp despite the years of rust and rubble - saws, picks, wedges. old wooden cranes and winches remain as well deep below, in surprisingly good condition despite their age. there's no flora this deep underground, although bat populations happily use the caverns to roost. |
