quick notes
- his partial iron body can cover as much or as little of him as you'd like, but there's always some iron visible!
- the rust elemental can affect his iron parts as well as his normal body, or both
- enchantment is a white wisp above his head
- he does have the longbody trait, even if that's not always obvious due to the extra legs!

I've got a few miles to go before I concede.
nature
as an object given sudden and inexplicable life, Fero's sense of self is fractured and ever-changing. he doesn't fully understand who or what he is, nevermind what his purpose might be or what meaning he should craft out of his existence. as a result he's erratic and elusive, but he is far from weak-willed - in fact, the one thing that never changes about him is his urge to keep moving, to both figuratively and literally keep opening doors. while he doesn't understand much, he still has the instinct of the skeleton key he once was. things should be open, whether these are windows, doors, small lockboxes, diaries or big facilities. what he can't open with his enchantment he will open through his rust elemental, corroding iron and steel until the lock is brittle enough to break through. if against all odds he can't get through with his enchantment or elemental, he will get through with his ability to size-shift - by either becoming so big he can't be held back, or by becoming small enough to sneak through keyholes or small gaps. the fact that he is in fact able to phase through things doesn't seem to be something he's aware of, and he's just as clueless about what to do with doors or windows when they're opened. he's restless and compulsive, his existence one of mindless momentum and of perpetually finding locks to unlock, one after the other, without pausing to understand why or to feel any satisfaction for having gotten through them. in fact, once things have been opened or unlocked by him he seems to forget them entirely only to find them a new obstacle later on. though he does seem to understand conversation and language, he doesn't seem able to speak himself. his silence is unnerving and often hostile because he has no patience for anyone who is in the way of his mission, or who is trying to redirect him from it. he's not out to cause harm and doesn't seem capable of doing so to begin with, but his icy disapproval is palpable when he's inconvenienced. he keeps to himself, his shifting iron body a visual marker of how fractured his psyche is. in the moments between locks he's overcome by emptiness and something akin to dread - but this is just another reason to keep going, lock after lock, forever. |
everybody's got someplace they wanna be let in.
boundary
Fero's field used to be part of a farm, although little of that farm remains now other than the main house that stands like a broken husk in the middle of the empty fields. the dirt road that leads to the house is still there, although overgrown in places, and following this path gets you to the crossroads that is Fero's transformation site. it is long since out of use, with a decaying signpost with faded letters. the people who come by are typically ones that have taken a wrong turn. the lack of human activity means there's a lot of animal activity instead. voles, mice and hare are abundant, and so are their predators, like red foxes and barn owls. linnets, yellowhammers and skylarks can be heard singing and the occasional roe deer spotted. Fero himself is very rarely here. the lack of items to unlock make him feel agitated and upset, and he only returns infrequently when the pull on his soul gets too strong to ignore. |
